Kauai is known for its lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and endless activities. Whether your family loves hiking, exploring hidden waterfalls, or snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, Kauai shows an adventurous family a good time.

As a Hawaii mom and travel planner, this is my best advice on things to do on Kauai with kids.

Remember to check out Kauai With Kids: The Ultimate Guide for more detailed insights on navigating this island and understanding its special vibe!

State Parks and Hiking Trails

Waimea Canyon State Park

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon is a must-see when visiting Kauai. The drive through the canyon offers jaw-dropping views of its deep red and green valleys, especially when the light hits just right. It’s a relatively easy stop with plenty of scenic lookouts.

Trails for Older Kids: For adventurous families, several trails in Waimea Canyon offer moderately challenging hikes. If your kids are up for it, the Canyon Trail is a popular option with stunning views and even a waterfall along the way. (Wear good shoes!)

Waimea Canyon With Toddlers: If you’re traveling with little ones, don’t worry! There’s still plenty to enjoy here. Check out the Iliau Nature Loop—a 0.3-mile trail that’s great for young children and beginner hikers. You can also stop by the Red Dirt Waterfall at mile marker 23 for a quick, easy adventure.

Koke’e State Park

Koke’e State Park, located just past Waimea Canyon, offers lush forest trails, sweeping mountain views, and opportunities to spot local wildlife.

The park is also home to the Kalalau Valley Lookout, one of Hawaii’s most iconic viewpoints. This lookout provides an incredible view of the Na Pali Coast and a good family photo opportunity.

The Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge

The Kilauea Lighthouse is perched on the northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands and offers spectacular ocean views. The wildlife refuge surrounding it is one of the best places to spot nesting seabirds and humpback whales during whale season (Dec-April).

This is a ticketed attraction, so plan your visit ahead of time.

Heads Up: The overlook at the end of Kilauea Road is always accessible, so you can enjoy ocean views even if you don’t make it inside. Keep a lookout for Hawaii’s state bird, the nēnē (Hawaiian goose), along with monk seals and green sea turtles.

Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

If your family loves scenic hikes, the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is a must. This seaside trail follows Kauai’s southern coastline, offering rugged sea cliffs, secluded coves, tide pools, and ancient petroglyphs. It’s a 3.8-mile out-and-back trail that’s considered moderately challenging, so it’s best for older kids who can handle a longer trek.

In the winter, this trail is one of the best spots on the island to watch for whales.

Kapa’a Bike Path

Also known as Ke Ala Hele Makalae, this beautiful and leisurely trail runs along the eastern coastline of Kauai. It’s an 8-mile, mostly flat, and stroller-friendly path perfect for enjoying a relaxing walk or bike ride with stunning ocean views.

Hele on Kauai is a locally owned company that rents bikes for every size. A family bike ride is a fun way to explore the coastline at your own pace while stopping at scenic beaches along the way.

Beaches and Water Activities

Explore Kauai’s Kid-Friendly Beaches

Kauai is home to some of the most accessible and family-friendly beaches in Hawaii. From the calm, shallow waters of Anini Beach to the protected swimming area at Lydgate Beach Park, there’s a beach for every swimming ability.

Check out my full list of The Best Kid-Friendly Beaches on Kauai to plan your perfect beach day!

Snorkeling Adventures

Kauai’s reefs are brimming with colorful fish, and snorkeling is one of the best ways to explore them. If your family prefers a DIY adventure, you can rent snorkel gear and head to Anini Beach, Lydgate Beach, or Poipu Beach for calm waters and plenty of marine life.

If you’re nervous about taking the kids out for the first time, consider booking a Guided Shore Snorkel Tour. With an experienced instructor leading the way, your family can explore Kauai’s pristine South Shore reefs while learning about tropical fish and sea mammals. Kids love to spot sea turtles basking in the sun!

Mountain Tubing Adventure

This unique activity is one of the most fun things you can do on Kauai! A Mountain Tubing Adventure takes you floating through irrigation canals that once served the old Lihue Sugar Cane Plantation. You’ll cruise through tunnels and down gentle rapids, surrounded by lush greenery. It’s perfect for kids 5 years and older, making it a great family-friendly adventure.

This popular tour is limited to 20 guests, so book early to snag your spot!

Family Surf Lessons

When in Hawaii, learn to surf! At close to 40, I’m just now learning for the first time, and it’s been a great bonding experience for me and my son. You never know until you try!

Poipu Beach is the perfect place for beginners, and it’s especially great for families with kids 8 and up. This surf lesson focuses on ocean safety, basic skills, and helping your family ride the waves in a fun, supportive environment. All gear is provided, so you just need to show up ready for a good time.

Explore the Na Pali Coast

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most breathtaking sights on Kauai, and the best way to see it is from the water. There are two popular options for families to explore this iconic coastline:

Sail along the stunning cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, keeping an eye out for dolphins and turtles along the way. This catamaran tour includes snorkeling, swimming, and a waterslide—making it a great pick for adventurous families. Kids as young as three can ride along.

For families with older kids (ages 7+), the Na Pali Coast Raft Adventure is a more thrilling option. You’ll explore sea caves, zip along the rugged coastline, and even have the chance to snorkel in hidden coves. It’s an adrenaline-packed adventure with unbeatable views.

Note: Na Pali Coast boat tours may not be appropriate for young children, especially babies or toddlers, as the waters can be rough, and the tours often last several hours. Due to bumpy conditions, they’re also not ideal for anyone who is prone to seasickness, has back or neck issues, or is pregnant.

If your family prefers a smoother experience or has members with mobility concerns, this fun, scenic flight might be a better alternative for viewing the Na Pali Coast.

Outdoor Adventures

Explore the Wailua River

The Wailua River is one of Kauai’s most scenic spots and offers a variety of family-friendly adventures. You can explore the river by kayak or boat, but however you choose, this lush area is packed with history and beauty.

Because our kids are still young, we opted for the relaxed option on the Fern Grotto Boat Tour. This leisurely cruise travels two miles along the river to the famous Fern Grotto, a lava rock cave covered in tropical ferns.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories of ancient Hawaii from live musicians and have a chance to participate with Auntie’s dancing hula. Our kids loved it, and we appreciated the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the ride.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, consider the Wailua River and Secret Falls Kayak and Hiking Tour. This five-hour adventure combines kayaking and a moderate hike through the jungle to Secret Falls. It’s great for older kids or teens who are ready for some active exploration.

Koloa 8-Track Zipline

If your family is up for an adrenaline rush, the Koloa 8-Track Zipline dares you to brave Kauai’s longest ziplines! You’ll soar over the Waita Reservoir and lush forests, with the option to try acrobatic stunts like flying upside down.

This is an ideal activity for thrill-seekers ages 10 and up, and the hands-free harness adds an extra layer of excitement. Snacks are provided, and the views from up high are unforgettable.

Kauai Backroads ATV Adventure

For a muddy, off-the-beaten-path adventure, hop on an ATV for the Kauai Backroads ATV Adventure. You’ll explore the lush landscapes of Kauai’s southern coast, from plantation trails to ocean cliffs.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories of Hawaiian history, visit movie sites, and even have a chance to try some catch-and-release fishing. This adventure is perfect for older kids (ages 4 and up) and families who want to see Kauai’s wild side.

Free Outdoor Activities

A man sits on a teeter-totter while two young kids are lifted into the air at a playground on Kauai.

Spouting Horn Blowhole

Located on Kauai’s South Shore near Poipu, the Spouting Horn Blowhole is a fun, quick stop with kids. Waves push through an ancient lava tube, creating a powerful water spout that shoots up to 50 feet in the air. The blowhole is especially impressive at high tide. My kids watching the ocean put on its natural show and cheer with excitement the entire time.

Maniniholo Dry Cave

If you’re exploring Kauai’s North Shore, the Maniniholo Dry Cave is a great stop for everyone to get out and stretch their legs. This cave is easy to access, located right across from Ha’ena Beach. Unlike most caves in Hawaii, this one is mostly dry, making it safe and accessible for all ages. It’s a fun spot to snap some cool family photos and let your kids explore.

‘Opaeka’a Falls

Easily accessible by car, ‘Opaeka’a Falls is a stunning waterfall located near Wailua. The viewpoint is just a short walk from the parking lot, making it a stress-free stop with kids. The falls cascade 150 feet down into a hidden pool, offering beautiful photo opportunities.

Combine this with a visit to the Wailua River or Fern Grotto for a full day of exploring Kauai’s natural beauty.

Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

A wide view of the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge with water, trees, and cloud-laced blue skies.

For a fun, little adventure, visit the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge on the West Side of Kauai. This historic bridge sways gently as you walk across it, offering a fun and slightly thrilling experience for kids and adults alike.

Hanapepe Town is also the inspiration for Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, so it’s a great spot for a little movie magic and to check out some local shops. If you’re around on a Friday, check out Hanapepe’s Art Night!

Best Kauai Playgrounds

If your little ones need to burn off some extra energy, Kauai has a few amazing playgrounds where they can let loose.

Lydgate Park on the East Side is a local favorite, featuring a massive play structure and a protected swimming area that’s perfect for younger kids.

Anaina Hou Community Park in Kilauea offers a great wooden playground with nearby mini-golf and walking trails for older kids.

Over on the South Shore, Poipu Beach Park has a small, shaded playground with a view, allowing you to relax and enjoy an epic beach sunset while your kids play.

Animal Encounters and Farms

A mom holds her toddler back from a cow sticking out its tongue at Kilohana Plantation's Kauai Plantation Railway tour in Hawaii.

Kauai Plantation Railway

Never mind the canyons and waterfalls we go out of our way to see, this is my toddler’s favorite activity on Kauai!

Hop aboard the Kauai Plantation Railway for a fun and informative tour of the historic Kilohana Plantation. The 40-minute train ride takes you through lush landscapes filled with tropical fruit trees, sugarcane fields, and local crops like taro.

Halfway through the ride, you get off to feed the friendly pigs, goats, and sheep, making this adventure perfect for kids of all ages.

Two Birds, One Stone: Kilohana Plantation offers many different tours (including a Rum Safari!) and a luau. This train ride is complimentary with admission to Luau Kalamaku!

Play & Bottle Feed Baby Goats on a Kauai Farm

At Kauai Farm, kids can bottle-feed adorable baby goats while learning about farm life. This 45-minute private experience offers plenty of time to cuddle with the goats and explore the farm, which is home to various animals like mini cows, rabbits, and turkeys.

Do your research beforehand—this activity is only available for a few weeks a year while the baby goats are still nursing!

Horseback Riding at Princeville Ranch

Princeville Ranch focuses on natural horsemanship and offers horseback lessons suited for beginners and kids ages four and up. The hands-on lessons start with grooming and tacking before moving into riding techniques, giving kids a well-rounded introduction to horseback riding.

You can choose between English and Western styles and enjoy riding through Princeville’s scenic landscapes. It’s a perfect activity for kids who love animals and want to try something new.

Family-Friendly Luaus

Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation

If you’re looking for a memorable family luau, Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation delivers! This luau offers a beautiful combination of cultural immersion and family fun.

Start your evening with a lei greeting and watch the underground imu ceremony, where they cook the pig for the feast. With an open bar, a buffet dinner, and a spectacular show, it’s a hit for all ages. Kids two and under are free.

This luau includes a 40-minute ride on the Kauai Plantation Railway!

Smith Family Garden Luau

Located in a lush botanical garden, the Smith Family Garden Luau is another favorite for families visiting Kauai. The evening begins with a tram tour of the beautiful grounds, followed by a traditional Hawaiian luau.

The buffet food is great, and the fire-knife dance will wow even the youngest members of your family. The open bar and food for grown-ups, paired with the tropical garden setting, make this traditional luau a great, family-friendly experience for everyone.

Food and Farmers Markets

Lydgate Farms Chocolate Tasting Tour

If you’re a chocolate lover like me, check out the Lydgate Farms Chocolate Tasting Tour

This easy expedition starts with a walk through the botanical gardens, where you can sample tropical fruits and honey produced right on the farm. But the real highlight is the tasting! Learn how cacao is grown and transformed into rich, decadent chocolate.

While the full tour is best suited for kids 7 and up, families with younger children can stop by the Lydgate Chocolate Tasting Room in downtown Kapa’a to sample chocolate and learn more about the process.

Visit the Local Farmers’ Markets

Kauai is home to some amazing farmers’ markets where you can stock up on fresh, local produce, handmade crafts, and delicious food.

Two of my favorites are the Kapa’a Sunshine Market and the Hanalei Farmers Market. Pick up some fresh fruit or enjoy a casual lunch with kids. I also love purchasing souvenirs from farmer’s markets because I know the money goes straight into the artist’s hands, and the gifts I bring back often come with a story to tell.

Try Shave Ice

No trip to Kauai is complete without indulging in shave ice! This classic Hawaiian treat is a hit with kids and adults alike. Just don’t call it a snow cone (iykyk)!

Kauai has some of the best spots for shave ice, offering all-natural flavors and fresh fruit toppings. For a memorable experience, head to Wishing Well Shave Ice on the North Shore or The Fresh Shave in Koloa—both are island favorites! It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring.

Botanical Gardens

A lush view of the entrance to Allerton Bontanical Gardens on Kauai.

Allerton Garden

Allerton Garden is a breathtaking combination of nature, art, and history. Located on Kauai’s south shore, this 80-acre garden is a great stop to explore lush landscapes while learning about the island’s history.

Their guided tour takes you through various “garden rooms” with towering trees, water features, and sculptures. If anyone in your family is a Jurassic Park fan, they’ll love seeing the massive Moreton Bay fig trees that made their cinematic debut here in the film!

A few things to keep in mind: reservations are required, tours often sell out in advance, and the garden is stroller-friendly. Pair with a quick stop to Spouting Horn Blowhole across the street!

Limahuli Garden Self-Guided Tour

Located on the North Shore, Limahuli Garden is both a place of natural beauty and a living tribute to Hawaiian culture. The 3/4-mile loop trail offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and coastline, with plenty of tropical plants to admire along the way.

The garden’s mission is to preserve native Hawaiian plants and ecosystems, so it’s a fantastic learning experience for kids. Children 12 and under can visit for free, making it a budget-friendly option. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the trail has some elevation gain.

Practical Tips for Visiting Kauai with Kids

Pack for Changing Weather

Kauai’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the island. Rain showers come and go, so it’s best to be prepared.

I recommend packing lightweight rain jackets when visiting Hawaii, a change of clothes for the kids, and waterproof bags for any electronics. If you’re heading to the North Shore, you’ll want to be ready for a sudden downpour. My best advice: go with the flow and have fun!

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Protecting your family’s skin from the sun is essential in Hawaii, but it’s also crucial to protect the coral reefs. Always use reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve the island’s natural ecosystems. Look for sunscreens that don’t contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, which are harmful to marine life.

Reserve Your Activities in Advance

Some of Kauai’s most popular attractions, like Ha‘ena State Park and the Kilauea Lighthouse, require advanced reservations, especially if you’re visiting during peak travel seasons. Book these activities as soon as possible to avoid missing out. This is especially true for guided tours like the Mountain Tubing Adventure that fill up quickly.

Plan for Downtime

While Kauai is full of exciting adventures, it’s important to balance your schedule with some downtime. The island’s laid-back vibe is one of its greatest appeals, so give yourself plenty of time to relax on the beach, take in the breathtaking views, or just enjoy a leisurely meal without feeling rushed.

Rent a Car

Kauai is best explored by car, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Many of the island’s top attractions are spread out, and public transportation options are limited.

Renting a car will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace and access remote locations. Make sure to book your rental well in advance, especially during busy seasons. I recommend checking out Discount Hawaii Car Rental for the best deals with free cancelation and no hidden fees.

Conclusion

To my family, Kauai is paradise, offering a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you’re snorkeling with sea turtles or soaking up the views of Waimea Canyon, your family is sure to create lasting memories on the Garden Isle.

I hope this guide helps take the guesswork out of your trip so you can focus on enjoying every moment with your family. Happy exploring!
